Another Allen movie down, nine to go. I'm still not sure if I should keep the score at 4.5 (9) or move it up to five, cause I loved the movie and I really don't see anything wrong with it, but I feel like something is holding me back. The movie was hilarious with everyone giving great performances. There was even a moment when my sis and I had to pause the movie we were laughing so hard. ("It's a silly apparatus that takes the bones out of fish, and if you prefer, although there's no point to it, it puts bones in fish.") I'm even laughing hard now just remembering it. And plus, it had Tony Roberts who is my favorite Allen co-star (excluding romantic leads cause Diane Keaton takes the cake). Anyhow, the movie's hilarious. So...

Tomorrow I'll be watching Stardust Memories and on Monday I'll see Purple Rose of Cairo and then there's only seven more to see: Small Time Crooks, Celebrity, Sweet & Lowdown, Husbands & Wives, Alice, September, and Interiors

I also watched Shaun of the Dead again. Third time in two days. Movie kicks so much ass.

A very unusual film, wonderful and entertaining. Woody Allen's creative and imaginative direction is a big plus. The cast is great, particularly Mary Steenburgen and Jose Ferrer. Not among Allen's best, but well worth a look. Good cinematography.

I think most people would agree that A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is one of Woody's most underwhelming films. After such perfect films as Bananas, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Interiors, and Manhattan I don't think many people were anticipating such lackluster fair. But it's still ok. Just not as good as my next post

It was cute. I would say midrange in terms of the quality of Woody Allen films.
It occured to me that I have never seen Julie Hagerty in anything but the Airplane movies. All the performances were good in general, in particular the women (Mia Farrow, Mary Steenburgen). I could easily pick out the parallels from a Midsummer Night's Dream.

Tony Roberts was mildly annoying, but only mildly. My biggest gripe was the same one I had with Alice: If you are going to go into fantasy, go into it all the way and don't half-ass it. The only real mystical part was the spinning metal ball and the INCREDIBLY cheesy special effects at the end. Those totally soured the film for me.

The Opinion: OK, but not great.

This is my first Buster Keaton film.

It's definately solid slapstick, inspired gags and all.

But seeming as how they had a big arguement over him in 'The Dreamers', I'd have to say I fall on the Chaplin side of the arguement, if this is a good representation of his work. While it's got all the joke brilliance of Chaplin, it doesn't have the heart.

Still, fun, funny, and I'd like to see more. The DVD has some shorts on it too, I'll watch them soon.

Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy always seems on the verge of doing something really interesting or funny, but nothing ever materializes. There are some intermittently hilarious bits, but even when it starts hitting a feverish pace towards the end, the set-up for a laugh takes so long that what I expected to find funny really wasn't once the joke hit the punchline. What the film needed, quite honestly, is more sex-it was at its best when it was depicting sex almost as a kind of daft group party game wealthy people play at the beginning of a 30's films like My Man Godfrey. It doesn't help that I don't care much for either "A Midsummer's Night Dream" or Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night, both of which are obvious inspirations here, but Allen largely fails to develop the kind of ethereality that gives those two some kind of magical, fluttery feeling. Of the six main actors Mia Farrow gets talked about the most (over and over and over comments are made about how beautiful she is...), but it's Julie Hagerty who steals the show as a blissfully sex-craved nurse. As a Shakespeare adaptation, as a Bergman homage-just as a comedy-A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is pretty weak stuff.

One of Woody Allen's weakest films and it just seems like it's going through the motions. It's very talky, but that's not a bad thing unless the dialogue isn't all that interesting.

Beethoven's even numbered symphonies are softer than his odd numbered, that would include his Sixth known as the "Pastoral." Although the music is all Mendelssohn, this movie is Woody Allen's Pastoral. The ultimate New Yorker puts on suspenders and leaves the Big Apple. Three couples spend the weekend in the country around the turn of the century. Lusting after each other in the woods and fields. Lush cinematography. Loaded with lively banter with Allen adding a touch of whimsy as a wacky inventor. Playful. Bucolic. A delightful frolic with a gentle sense of humor.
