Better than Zero Hour lol

This movie is a pathetic attempt at comedy. The jokes are embarrassing and in come instances downright racist. I do not know why this movie is considered to be one of the top comedies of all time. The jokes are on a childish level and are irrelevant to the plot. Four words for this movie--disgrace to american culture.

Incredible Comedy and Jokes, surprisingly great acting and a high amount of entertainment add up to what could be easily considered the best Spoof film ever. Like any spoof, the story isn't anything special, but it's one of those films where you won't care at all. Surely this film has to have something wrong with it. Nope, and don't call me Shirley.

I think this movie has to be the grand daddy of all comedy spoofs. Almost every comedy to date, has tried to imitate it.
It even had a tough time imitating itself in the sequal.

Airplane was just so stupid, it was funny. My favorite thing was how they would take a simple comment and turn it into a joke. Like, when someone says...surely you don't mean that.
And, Leslie Neilson would reply. "yes I mean it...and stop calling me Shirley! Funny!

You almost have to watch this movie several times to catch all the jokes. Some of them are background jokes, like some guy doing his laundry in the contol tower at the airport. And, that Crazy guy coming up with all kinds of one-liners.

My favorite scene has to be the disco bar, where the two girlscouts are fighting, because it is such a rough place, and the guy who is stabbed in the back, and the stewardess just thinks he is dancing with her.

Not to mention all the cameos of various stars. And, of course we can't forget. "Hey Joey, have you ever scene a grown man naked? Do you like gladiator movies? LOL!!!

It is just crazy.

Wow... airplane has some of the best old comedies ever... it is a masterpiece

Constant laughs and an all together genius comedy.

It's US working title was "Kentucky Fried Airplane." Doesn't that seal the deal?

Any comedic performer looking to perfect his or her own ability to keep a straight face should study the masterful work turned in by Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Peter Graves, and especially Leslie Nielsen in Airplane!. However, as hard as it is to admit, the hype that has kept piling on for the film over the years is only par with its best jokes which only make up roughly half the movie (Can't say I'm surprised - who wants to remember the DOA lines?).

It should be noted (the overall lesson, if any, that Airplane! teaches) that the hit-or-miss aura is a common detail to accompany this type of juvenile clowning, and after the team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker suffered critical slings and arrows from their first film effort The Kentucky Fried Movie, I doubt they cared. The main goal, I'm sure, was to give that damned over-dramatic Airport film franchise what it had coming. I'm glad they did it (and then some), but it sure is difficult to refrain from skipping over the entire trying Saturday Night Fever spoof sequence to get to "Oh, stewardess, I speak jive."

The film also has a fondness for illusions as gags, like endless eggs popping out of a sick lady's mouth or Air Force Captain Rex Kramer (Stack) stepping out of the mirror he finished dressing himself with. Most of these gags are more cute than funny (I'll make an exception for the solution to the deflating autopilot balloon Otto), but they do keep the film moving along.

As for the script, there's definitely a reason Airplane! is so quotable... actually, there are two. The first would be the great ideas like children conversing like adults ("No thanks, I take it black. Like my men.") and pilots with names like Roger, Clarance, and Oveur trying to make the plane take off. The other reason: Flawless deadpan delivery. Nobody but Graves can say "Jimmy,... do you like movies about gladiators?" like he can. Nobody but Hays can look as troubled as he does when his "drinking problem" gets the best of him. I'm convinced that absolutely nobody on Earth could look up from performing gynecology in the coach part of a plane to exclaim toward the cockpit "What the hell's going on up there?!?" as seriously as Leslie Nielsen did.

I am more of a fan of the Zucker film that came eight years later, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, than I am of any other of their comedies including Airplane!, which I'm aware was quite a peak for the spoof genre. With The Naked Gun, the humor and delivery had some time to be sharpened enough to be laughed at without an ounce of shame or guilt, whereas Airplane! appeals more to the child at heart, sometimes succumbing to its own wackiness. Still, that half of Airplane! I still appreciate is thankfully spread throughout as opposed to grouping into a chunk, and (sorry, I have to say it) SURELY that is why the comedy still gains fans today.

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST COMEDY IN 1980!!!!! IT'LL KEEP YOU LAUGHING! THE GAGS ALL WORK! I'M WRITING THIS IS IN CAPITAL LETTERS BECAUSE I'M EXTREMELY ENTHUSIASTIC WITH THIS MOVIE!!!!

Using the as-of-then recent slew of airplane disaster movies as fodder for parody, "Airplane!" manages to impress everyone in the entire world with it's as-of-then unique brand of comedy... That is, everyone but me.

To me, most of the humour falls flat and some of it even had me sinking into some kind of pun induced coma. Worst yet is that when a point has been made and we understand quite well that late 70's disaster flicks had a lot of melodrama and featured unrealistic relationships, the film will return and show us the sappy melodrama yet again. Given, it was kind of funny the second time, too. However, after the fifth time... Well, gets old rather quickly.
