What a marvelous piece of story telling. I loved this the moment I saw it. It ran on PBS in one hour installments and it was pure torture waiting a whole week for the next episode to come out. When that next episode came on we were just glued to the tv and the whole world stopped. You can tell from the first minute that the director, Kevin Sullivan, made this from the love of his heart - its that good. The camera work is so precise and at times sweeping and even grand that it was a pleasure watching this. The landscape shots are so beautiful, that I wanted to visit Prince Edward Island! It made you look it up on the map. It portrays that period of living to a high degree. I appreciated the attention to detail. I also have to give alot of credit to some wonderful writing done by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Its the kind of story that sweeps you away in wanting to know every moment of Anne's life. The tragic, the sentimental and most definitely the hilarious. This was our introduction to Megan Follows and what perfect casting it was. She literally is Anne and I can't imagine anyone else doing such justice to the role. There is tremendous talent in this whole production but for me, the great, one-of-a kind Colleen Dewhurst made this whole thing special. She has so much acting talent and makes you love the prickly sided Marilla Cuthbert whose heart is melted, eventually, by Anne. Richard Farnsworth is terrific as Marilla's brother, Mathew, who loves Anne from first sight. You end up loving every single character in this story because the development is amazing. You end up knowing how important each and every one of them is to the story and you care about every single one.

The behind the scenes feature/making of and the audition of Megan Follows on the dvd/vhs is a real bonus. It was completely interesting to watch Kevin Sullivan at work and the inspiration and talent of Megan Follows. You can feel how much these people got into their roles. Also check out the second round of four episodes they made a year or so later. The story continues of Anne's graduation from Queens College and her journey to make her own way. A whole slew of new characters enters the story while the original characters are still there. Fascinating and the ending is every bit as sentimental and mushy as you want it to be.

This is the type of film you WANT to watch over and over. It just makes you feel good! :)

This is the best miniseries I've ever sceen. I have watched it many times and it never fails to move me.

Very sincere and faithful to the classic book, but it's ponderous three hour length nearly kills it. It has that made for television look, a cheap production quality. Looks more like a tv show than a movie. Very hard to sit through.

My Review: This is a charming story of an orphan girl living in the early 1900's. I think the movie is probably geared more toward young women in the age group of say 10-14, and I would highly recommend it to any girl in that age group. There are a lot of life lessons to be learned about how to behave that would probably be as applicable to today's young women as it was 100 years ago. Richard Farmsworth's role was heartwarming and he played the character perfectly. Megan Follows gets a little tiring at times, as does the Colleen Dewhurst character, but all in all, this is a delightful coming-of-age film.

SYNOPSIS:
The story of a young girl who finds adventure (and misadventure) as she makes her way from a series of unpleasant foster families and orphanage experiences to the paradise of Prince Edward Island and the sternly Cuthbert household of Green Gables.

I find it hard to believe, that after all this time, that Anne of Green Gables has not been reviewed or rated on Rotten Tomatoes. This is really a surprise. This movie was a huge success on TV when it initially ran on the CBC in Canada and PBS on US Television.

Megan Follows makes the role of Anne her own and somehow, Keven Sullivan, who was an unknown and still is really, managed to create a believable, charming and moving film. Colleen Dewhurst is superb as the cantankerous Marilla and you won't find a better Matthew Cuthbert than Richard Farnsworth. Schuyler Grant is also impressive as Anne's best friend, Diana Barry and the film also has some famous Canadian actors as well, like Jayne Eastwood and Chris Wiggins. A truly Classic canadian film that deserves a better transfer than on the present DVD.

It looks as though Kevin Sullivan is interested in making a remake of Anne, but finding anyone that even comes close to Megan Follows remarkable performance is going to be nest to impossible. At any rate, I have no interest in this next film, which is supposed to be a prequel to the first film.

The second Anne film is certainly not as strong as the first in the series with Anne pursuing her teaching career. It certainly isn't dull either with great performances and a solid script. The third film also featured Follows all grown up and married. The last film was okay, but lacked the charm and magic of the first.

Sweet tale with dynamic cast. Each character fully embraces their role and is very believable. A heart warming and classic tale of family and friendship that will stay with you. Based on the series by L.M. Montgomery, this series of movies with Megan Follows stays true to the story and captures the setting of Prince Edward Island's now famous green gabled homestead.
