Basic (2003)
John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Harry Connick
Directed by John McTiernan
100 min (?)
Grade B- (Fresh) (14)
Plot twists are bound in this unique thriller about a military training mission gone badly. The acting is great, Jackson was very good as a "TI". This film keeps you guessing the truth right up to the end.

Wow. This All-State Chorus was an unforgettable experience. Anyway, back to the point:

BASIC:
Basic is, basically (bad joke, I know), one of the worst movies I have ever seen. With the success of plot twists like the one in The Sixth Sense, people seem to think that any old shocker will do. Unfortunately, this one just leaves you scratching your head, wondering why you wasted five bucks renting this movie.

The first half of the movie, admittedly, was an intriguing mystery about a training mission gone horribly wrong. However, the plot twists in the latter half of the movie were ridiculous and far-fetched. At the end, my friends and I started laughing at the absurdity. Furthermore, the chemistry between John Travolta and Connie Nielsen is contrived. Travolta's jokes to Nielsen were funny at first, but a million corny puns later, I was ready to throw a tomato at my own television screen.

Overall, this was a huge disappointment. I was expecting more from a movie with such stars like Travolta and Jackson. Unless you are a die-hard Travolta fan, I suggest you spend your two hours watching better movies than Basic.

Today seemed to last forever. And that's a good thing when I have so few days off. Especially when I was asleep till noon.

I saw In America this afternoon, and it's the 11th film of 2003 I give a perfect score. It has some definite flaws, but damn, was it moving and emotional. I've lived through a lot of situations similar to those of the characters in the film, so it struck me very hard. Afterwards I had to fight off tears for about 10 minutes. And not little tears....I was inches away from bawling.

Tonight my roomate and I watched a double feature of Big Fish and Basic. He had not seen either, and I had already seen each thrice. Good times were had by all. Big Fish is still holding up in my book, and seems it's going to remain among my favorite movies of all-time for awhile. Basic is a film that grows on me every time I watch it, and I can't believe the poor reception it got. Just because the plot is complex/contrived doesn't make it awful.

I've now seen 99 films that were released in 2003. I think I'm gonna see The Station Agent soon, which will be 100. After I hit that, I might make a list of them in order, just for the health of it. Could be fun.

I want to watch In America again though. I need to get my mom to come see it too. Got a week to do so.

I'm going to bed now, at 3:10 AM. This is the earliest I've done so since Tuesday. Adios.

Movie: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) I loved this movie... probably because I like Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, as they are great together in this movie and are great for their parts. Kate plays the girly girl, Andie, who writes for a women's magazine. Andie is writing an article titled "How to lose a guy in 10 days", as she does everything womanly possible, that women supposedly tend to do, to cause a guy to break up with her within 10 days. Matthew plays the usual manly man, name Ben, who works in Advertising for sports and beer companies, he however really wants to be advertise for the diamond industry for some real money, so he takes a bet that he can get any woman to fall in love with him in time for the Diamond Gala in... that's right 10 days, and his prize if he can do so is to get the diamond account. Of course it's fairly easy to figure out where the story goes, but the movie however is fully of surprises and laughs. It's a great romantic comedy and date movie.

Movie: Basic (2003) Much like Identity... Basic is another movie with some twists... however the thing about Basic is that you don't see them coming nor could you figure it out, because once you think you do, another twist surfaces, until you think you figure it out, and of course another twist...

Movie: Recruit (2003) Colin Farrel and Al Pacino star in this CIA thriller. I love the movies where nothing is what it seems... this is one of those... It's an excellent flick, and I loved it.

Movie: S.W.A.T. (2003) Another movie starring Colin Farrel, and you can never expect a dull moment with the superb one liners from Samuel L. Jackson... who co-stars in this SWAT flick. It's fun and enjoyable to watch... especially with the twists and turns I love so much.

Movie: Anger Management (2003) An Adam Sandler movie that couldn't fill the shoes of the likes of Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison, or even one of their shoes, but it's still pretty funny.

I don't think I was intelligent enough for it. The ended caught me completely off guard. John Travolta gives an interesting performance which is equally matched with the rest of the supporting cast.
