Well I was gonna wait until tomorrow sometime but I was kickin it upstairs and figured why not. So I watched Blow and I was far more pleased with that movie than I had expected it to be. I guess the way I would describe it, is full. It just felt like a full movie or something to that extent. Johnny Depp handled his role really good too. He had that cocky attitude while still being able to show his own insecurities. I think what I really like about this film, even though I dont think it was what it was aiming for necessarily, is that you dont have to make money. You cant just be living for a point in your life and then after that point, have your life be satisfied. Because either you will reach that point, and you wont know what to do, or you will never reach that point, and no matter what, theres always going to be something around the bend. I dont know, but I definately liked it alot, and far better than Scarface.

Well I FINALLY got this movie. It was the last of the selection they had at the movie store and it was cheap too. Only $16.00. I went on a movie spree yesterday and this was the first onw I decided to watch. I loved this movie, it made me laugh and it actually made me cry at some parts but especially at the end. Before viewing this film, I didn't even know who George Jung was really, another reason why I enjoy this film. I liked how Johnny narrated the film too.

The movie:
Blow is based on the true life of George Jung. He is the man that claims to have smuggled 85% of the cocaine that was in america during the late 70's and early 80's. He had millions upon millions of dollars, and yet was never really happy.

There are few movies that get me as emotionally connected to the characters as this movie did. I knew from the beginning that, after earning tons of money from drug smuggling, he was going to fall hard.

The movie takes a unexpected turn towards the middle, where instead of the fun partying, or negotiating with columbian drug lords, it is more about his relationship with his daughter, and his relationship with his father.

The story is interesting, Johnny Depp plays this character with more emotion than I have seen him play in any other movie, and it is well directed and moving.

johnny depp gives a brilliant performance as george jung...who has the infamous distinction of opening the cocaine trade between the united states and pablo escobar... this movie is fun and exciting, but also has a lot of heart.... it is like a roller coaster ride and shows jung's ascent into the lap of luxury, only to face tragedy, then rebound and ascend again, only to face tragedy ...in the end, the only thing he wants is a relationship with his daughter and he fights and fights for it.... i'm sure the movie puts jung in a very favorable light and depp is extremely likeable in character... however, know that this movie may not be dead-on accurate, and just let your adrenaline rise thanks to the exciting storyline and your emotions flow thanks to the heartfelt performances (especially depp and liotta)

When I was like...15 when this movie came out, I really wanted to see this movie. Now seeing this movie now, I am glad I waited. I am not really sure what to think of this movie, much like the rotten tomatoes site, I am kind of 50/50 on for this movie. The acting was good, especially well done by Depp and the sound track was ok but there seemed to be flaws in the story that made me scratch and think "why"? Plus, characters kind of reappear and appear randomly in the movie. I guess for a drug movie, it is one of the best I have seen so far but I think it would only attract a very limited group of people...yeah.

There are moments in Ted Demme's Blow that recall the stylistic confidence and bravura of Goodfellas, but those moments only make Blow pale in comparison to Scorsese's masterpiece and remind the audience that the film is basically an empty exercise that dramatizes the life of a drug dealer without really tapping into his soul. Even though Blow is consistently compelling and features a strong lead performance by Johnny Depp, it is never able to find a thematic unity for its story, and eventually the movie becomes little more than a by-the-numbers biopic. Worse still, by choosing to portray its subject, George Jung, as an almost sympathetic character, Blow misses a chance to create a complex drama about a flawed man who achieved a level of success before crashing back to reality. For those that do not know, Jung was the man who established the cocaine market in America during the 1970s...a dubious achievement that the film, to its credit, does not either condemn or glorify. Johnny Depp is quite convincing as Jung, but the character essentially remains a mystery for most of the film's running length. We forgive Blow's lack of depth because it is so stylistically assured, particularly at the beginning of the film, which unfolds with a bravado similar to films like Boogie Nights and the aforementioned Goodfellas. However, once the inevitable downward spiral begins to come, Blow begins to lose its way. Instead of examining the ways in which Jung's actions came back to haunt him (like Scorsese did with the Henry Hill character in Goodfellas), Blow is content to portray Jung as a victim of bad luck and as a man betrayed and manipulated by those who loved him (particularly by his wife, played by Penelope Cruz). The longer Blow drags on, the less compelling it becomes, and we begin to yearn for some genuine drama. Despite its flaws, Blow remains somewhat engaging for most of its running length, if only because Demme cranks up the soundtrack and entertains us with his visual inventiveness. If Demme and Depp had been able to find the true heart of their character and discover what made him tick, Blow might have been a superb biopic. Instead, it is almost like the drug Jung marketed: it gets us high on its possibilities before leaving us strung out and yearning for more.
