One of the Darkest Movies yet funny as heck movies of all time 9/10

The darkest of black comedies, but also the funniest and unsettling. You don't want to laugh at the absurd possible realities, but you have to because it's just plain funny. It's also funny how relevent this film is today. The film is chillingly still relevant today, especially when looking at one's ideological bigotry triumphing over knowledge, law, and common sense. Peter Sellers is simply amazing in his three, yes three roles, and is perfectly countered by the great George C. Scott.

I love it when I have to watch a film for class and it turns out to be a film I would actually pay to watch...

Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick, 1964) - masterpiece
Stanley Kubrick may just as well be the best director of all time. All of his films are admirable works of art, even if not all together satisfying. Although, Dr. Strangelove is an extremely satisfying satire. And Kubrick is at his best. He neglected to tell some of his actors the true meaning of the film to get the most desired performance out of all of them. Also, he left in a shot of George C. Scott accidentally falling down because he played it off so well. There is a lot of comic genius going on in this masterpiece.

Dr. Strangelove (1964) 9/10 :fresh:

Just look at the picture. Now, what looks out of place? Oh yes, Enrique! Okay, so he isn't in the movie enough to ruin it, but he doesn't help the situation. The biggest problem with the movie, is that it has so damn many. First, shooting on digital was a bad decision. The movie looks really ugly. Second, there is no logic at all, which would be okay, but this movie takes itself too seriously. None of the performances are very memorable. Johnny Depp is okay, but he has been MUCH better. One of the worst of 2003. Avoid it.

This fantastic movie is one of the funniest experiences of my life. A study in ironi, a political and funny comedy over one of the biggest political issues of it's time - the bomb. Peter Sellers is playing two roles simply magnificent. DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE!!

One of my top-10 all-time favorites is finally in my collection at home. Now I can watch it whenever I desire.

It had been awhile since I watched this. Possibly the last time was on Valentine's Day (Strangelove, get it?) in 1996 or 97, when the film was being shown in a series at the old Marion (Illinois) Civic Center. Before that series could be completed, the Civic Center, a remnant from early 1900s, was burned down in a fire started by a vandal.

This go around I was more horrified at how real and tragic this comedy is. I had to shake my head in disgust when the president (Peter Sellers) reminded General Turgidson that the US never strikes first. Too bad that guy isn't president now.

My favorite character in movie is Major Kong, played by Slim Pickens. I read on the DVD box that Sellers was to play that role as well. I wonder what that would have been like? It probably would've been funny, but am glad Slim Pickens got the part. The image of him riding the bomb as if it were a bucking bronco is an indelible scene.

Here's a classic that I've heard nothing but good things about. I tracked down the DVD last night and popped it in as soon as I got home. It was only my second Stanley Kubrick experience (the first being The Shining), so I was pretty pumped to get right into it.

The best part about this film is that it doesn't want to admit that it's a satirical comedy at heart. The satire itself is heavy, but the jokes are mostly subtle. Naturally, a few will catch your ear immediately (i.e. Premier Kissoff), but most will hit you a minute or two afterwards, when they're put into the context of the situation.

The story itself is about the unfolding of events when an entire squadron of B-52 bombers are ordered to attack their targets in Russia. A miscommunication somewhere along the line makes it impossible to reverse the order (when all of the "fail-proof" safeguards... well, fail), and panic ensues. The President tries to ease things over with the Russian Premier, while a balls-out general throws forward every idea this side of Thursday (none of which really make any sense). Peter Sellers plays three roles in the movie, including Dr. Strangelove himself - the director of weapons research for the US. He does a great job with each of his roles, and tremendous supporting actors make him look even better.

The humor of the film, as I mentioned before, is usually funny only when considering the context of the situation (i.e. war raging in front of a billboard stating "Peace is our Profession"), but most of it is just downright hysterical for that very reason. It's also surprising how very relevant the film still is today, though it was set during the Cold War. Parallels can easily be drawn between the conflict of that period, and the conflict(s) in which our country is involved today. Fortunately, while the humor in this movie is very satirical of our military and some of their policies, it's light-hearted at it's core so as not to make a joke out of the end of the world.

I can recommend this film to anyone. The humor is not hard to understand, and the movie is just a lot of fun to watch. Plus, it's an all-time classic that hasn't been ruined by a "re-imagining", so see it while it still has some dignity.

Somewhat of a disappointment, but after watching the documentary Inside the Making of Dr. Strangelove , I had a greater appreciation for the subject matter of this film. The "black" comedy in itself is pure genius, although I would have enjoyed a little more of it coming from the directorial greatness that is Stanley Kubrick. If anything, this film should be seen for Peter Sellers' performances alone.
