Capote - "This is not one of those dull biographies that chronicles the subject's entire life, just a small defining period."

A History of Violence - "It's gory and violent, but satisfyingly entertaining."

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang - "It features the odd pairing of two almost forgotten actors, Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr., in a murder mystery. The banter between the two is consistently funny throughout the film."

Elizabethtown - "Like 'Seven Swords,' there's probably a good 90 minute film in this 135 minute romance."

The Matador - "Pierce Brosnan is hilarious as a sleazy assassin who's lost his edge. It's fun to see Brosnan satirize his James Bond persona with such reckless abandon."

Total aimlessness. No point. Need I say more? I hope this is somehow salvagable because I saw the festival cut, but I'm not really sure that it's the editing that's somehow going to fix the whole mess. I don't even think that the emotional process Drew goes through make actual sense, and you don't really end up feeling for any of the characters. People who will like this will only like it because it has a happy fluffy ending after an hour and a half of pointlessness (at least there's the usual Crowe tie the ending together nicely thing going though this one is definitely an empty one) or because it's Crowe and they can't not like it. Frankly, I'm really disappointed. I think success has gotten to his head and he's overestimated our fondness for quirky realities and people when the story is lying in pieces everywhere.

A really, really good film. Cameron Crow adds another wonderful, funny, and unbashedly sentimental film. These characters are real, and rich, and fully realized.

This movie is a must-see for Crowe fans. I'm not one. And I loved it!

I feel sorry for the filmmaker that so many critics have panned this movie. (At the time of writing this review, it has a 43% tomatometer rating.)

True, the film is somewhat self-indulgent. True, it's not the most coherent script. True, the final act of the film goes all over the place (meandering?). It almost feels like the filmmaker went on a nostalgia trip and wrote the first thing that came to mind. It also feels like it went into production without a lot of eyes seeing the script and telling the filmmaker why most elements in the film won't work.

And that is precisely why this movie is beautiful. And emotionally satisfying. For once a film comes straight from the heart and nobody attempted to "standardize" it to suit "mainstream" audiences. The characters are not the most realistic, yet there is a certain cinematic charm about all the characters that you can't but love them. All of them! (A la a lot of Coen brothers' characters.)

Adapting a line from the movie: I'd rather watch a fiasco than a failure!

I haven't seen a movie this good in years. In a story that takes you from one end of the spectrum to the other, Crowe did a magnifacent job of making a depressed and sad situation funny, romantic, and priceless.

It was captivating and completely pulled you in, allowing you to feel part of the story at hand. I found myself relating to more than one situation.

Needless to say, I am not a huge fan of Kirsten Dunst; however, this film proved me wrong and changed my view. Every character played a significant role in this film. Crowe had such a way of throwing in pieces here and there that made you laugh because you just weren't expecting it.

Definitely a film that I recommend you seeing over and over. I know I plan on going to the theatre when it officially comes out to watch it again.

The movie hasn't even come out and I already want to strangle the entire cast of "Elizabethtown". It looks like that movie wants to endear me to death with saccharine sweet schmaltz!

And from rotten tomatoes' very own review bites:
Dunst radiates devilish, sprightly mettle and a feisty, winsome personality that will generate a glow in the hearts of men (and older boys). - Jules Brenner, Variagate.com

That's the bite from a positive review?!! Is he on drugs? Sorry, that's a self-answering question. What kind of crack is he on?!! Thanks for telling us you were lusting after 23 year old Kirsten Dunst while watching the movie. From that description, how is this role different from the one she played in "Wimbledon"?

Bite from another positive review:
I left the theater emotionally satisfied, and sometimes that's better than having a perfectly tuned plot. - Joshua Tyler, cinemablend.com

This guy seems to be falling for the very trend that I'm wary of, the trend that "Garden State" and "Thumbsucker" are indicative of. Eventually some professional reviewer will have a name for it, but there seems to be a trend towards mainstreaming indie film, and removing the edge, art, and risk-taking from it in favor of candy-coated, faux-artsy, emo-drenched, feelgood, quasi-indie Hollywood-ization. And they're mostly going to be about emotionally fragile, upper-middle class teenage suburban white boys.

These people are willing to fall for a feelgood sheen on crappy films.

However, I haven't seen "Elizabethtown" and very likely wont, so I can't give the movie any lower than a nominal 4/10.

Okay. So I saw Elizabethtown today, and I honestly thought it was mighty fine... (hah, that sounded weird...) I found myself not wanting it to end! Anyway, I disagree with... almost all the critics... Honestly... The Globe gave it 2/4 stars... what's up with that? Okay, I think it would have been a disaster if Ashton Kutcher had ended up as Drew, (thank god he was too busy), but he didn't, and Orlando was perfection! Alright, his looks are a plus... but... I really think he was good. It was so weird seeing his with an American accent!

As for chemistry, I thought they were nice together! Please, no chemistry? What's up with that? (Am I overusing phrases?) Well... This was funny (Chuck... wow.) and... overall really quite a good movie. I hope they do well money-wise, since the reviews weren't so hot. I bet they will, the theatre I went to was pretty... populous? Is that the word? Sure. Lots of teenage girls like me. The day finally came, the day that I had been waiting 45+ days for. And it met all my expectations. See it! :fresh:
