I finally got my beginner's and I went around driving. It was pretty cool. I seen Full Metal Jacket and it was pretty funny especially when the officer was naming the privates at the start. I was wanting to put one of my favorite bands on the celebs thing but I couldn't them in their search, oh well. I'll put a different band in instead. Anyway this is about as exciting as my journal's going to get right now so I'll just leave it off here.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, Drill Instructor: How tall are you, private?
Private Cowboy: Sir, five-foot-nine, sir.
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, Drill Instructor: Five-foot-nine, I didn't know they stacked shit that high.

If there is a film with lots of shit, then it has to be Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. Shit is, at its core, its prime subject; it's what the film revolves around and the people it deals with are full of it. Full Metal Jacket provides us with a world of shit. After all, this is partly true -- we do live in a world of shit. Everywhere, no matter where you look at, is shit. The soldiers' lives are worthless -- "Were you born worthless, or did you have to work at it?" screams Sergeant Hartman at one point -- and the Vietnam War is shit, too, but at least they're doing it for a cause. Despite this world of shit that Full Metal Jacket talks about, its ultimate message is somewhat optimistic -- and true, as well. Kubrick shows little empathy towards his characters -- while his films are known for their emotional detachment and bleakness, Full Metal Jacket is rather different, in the sense that not even the viewer can truly feel for the characters. Is it Kubrick's directing style or did he do it deliberately? Either way, I felt that the soldiers were treated, both by the director and the sergeant, as just that: shit.

Kubrick shows his genius in one of the most shapeless and somewhat misunderstood films of his career by portraying the harsh realities of war like few directors had ever done up until that point. Apocalypse Now and Platoon had told us the now clich

You will give your rifle a girl's name because this is the only pussy you people are going to get. Your days of finger-banging ol' Mary J. Rottencrotch through her pretty pink panties are over.

War is hell.

This movie'll tell you that better than any other I've seen. FMJ is split into 2 parts. THe first part consists of recruit training, involving the hard-nosed, rapid-fire swearing, loud voiced Sergeant Hartman, and the fat slob Gomer Pyle (Both performances are brilliant.). Many feel this part was great, and I agree. If the film kept the pace of the 1st half, it might be a masterpiece.

THe second half takes place in battle; in Vietnam. Pvt. Joker, fresh off recruit training, is now a journalist, sent to report happenings in the Tet offensive. Soon his squadron is pinned down by a sniper, and chaos ensues. The second part was interesting, but not as good as the first. It lost me midway through, only gaining much of my interest towards the end. Unlike the first half, the acting is really mediocre. In all, its a great film

Of the Kubrick films I have now seen
1. A CLockwork Orange
2. Dr. Strangelove
3. Paths Of GLory
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
5. Full Metal Jacket
6. Lolita
7. The Killing
8. The Shining

I watch Eyes Wide SHut next week.

Possibly the best movie based around the vietnam ever made. The first half of the film draws out to be a hilarious but in some cases rather disturbing look at training. The aptmospheric shots of the battle after the Tet Cease Fire ( i cant spell) also leave on in a feeling of suspence. The film in all is possible the best Vietnam Film ever written and concieved.
