If you have ever had to navigate down the monumentous road of grief, you must see this film. The effectiveness of this film is in it's understated, genuine characters. John Cusack is truly in an elite class of actors. While your heart will break, it will also melt as Stanley (John Cusack) begins to warm and soften as the family journeys together throughout the film. A fantastic movie- that was unappreciated- much like our soldiers are today. Ironic to the film's premise, isn't it?

Wow, this movie really made me thankful for the men and women who risk it all for our country! It was well acted and very realistic in it's portrayal. A humbling experience for anyone who watches it.....there wasn't a dry eye in our house.

Heartbreaking performance by John Cusack that leads up to it's very good ending even if it feels a little rushed.

The local English newspaper in Amsterdam, gave a short brief and good review of this movie. On IMDb, it was a mixed bag of reviews -- some of them really critical about the movie. My initial euphoria to go and see the movie faded fast, but still I went to see the movie -- because I had promised to accompany my colleague -- Claudia.

The movie is about Stanley Phillips (John Cusack) and his two daughters Heidi (Shelan Okeefe) and Dawn (Gracie Bednarczyk). Philips wife Grace is in military and serving in Iraq. One day the news comes in of her death. Philip is shocked, but he does not have courage to tell the news to his daughter. In turn, he decides to take them to take his daughters on a road trip to a Children Theme Park. Along the road he agrees to be cheerful and happy and give his daughters whatever they wish for. At the very end, when he tells them -- it gets very emotional.

It is typical small budget, cute and simple story. John Cusack who is also the producer of the movie -- acts his role of Stanley with perfection to the core. Each and every twitch of his eye and expression are measurable with the pain and agony that is there in his heart. He enacts this role brilliantly. Hats off to him. The two daughters -- though not much historics to display -- are good as supporting cast.

There are many emotional and sad moments in the film, and I would advice to carry your tissues and handkerchiefs along with you -- if you are those senti types like me.

This is the first movie of Director James C. Strouse, and he has done an above average job in direction. I would not say brilliant. If it was not with the great acting of John Cusack, this movie would have fallen flat as any other ordinary movie.

Surprisingly Clint Eastwood has given musical score for this movie. One more feather on his cap. Wow -- it was not strikingly noticeable, but was good.

I understand the few critical comments on some reviewers after seeing the film -- like US military not allowing men with eye problems, and the cinematography. Both critical comments though correct -- they are too minor to take away the goodness and touchiness of the film. Yes the camera work was a big let down for me too. The cinematography was out of place and majorly looked like I am seeing a 1970s movie -- the type of film (or negative used).

But overall, a very pleasant and heart warming experience to see this movie.

Street Kings - This is a wildly overwrought and sleazy drama is hoping to come across as edgy but everything is so overdone. It fulfills all the requisite elements of the modern crime picture; double crosses, forlorn anti-heroes, bloody violence, but Street Kings misses the mark big time when it comes to any nuance. Every beat of this murky, convoluted dirty cops mystery is plain and obvious. If you cannot guess within minutes who the eventual culprits will be then you haven't seen enough movies. Every character is a clich

"Grace Is Gone" is a slight movie that has headier ideas than its apparently thin plot would seemingly allow for. Stanley(John Cusack) would rather be anywhere than a support group for spouses of soldiers, especially considering that he was once a lifer in the army until he was forced out due to poor eyesight. Now, with his wife Grace serving in Iraq, he sits on the sideliness, working as a manager for a home furnishing store. Ironically, he is unable to talk about the war in Iraq with his daughters Heidi(Shelan O'Keefe), 12 going on 35, and Dawn(Gracie Bednarczyk), 8. His rigid and reserved stance makes it even harder for him to deal with the news of his wife's death, not even telling his daughters. To delay the inevitable, he instead agrees to take them to Enchanted Gardens in Florida through a landscape of chain motels and restaurants. Or do they? There is something entirely symbolic about a man who cannot tell the truth about a war, driving to a fantasy land. On the way, he stops at his parents' house where there is no sign of them but his brother John(Alessandro Nivola) as Stanley probably thinks of him as a leftist layabout. The reality is probably much more complex.

Grace is Gone is a crap. I hated every single character who appeared in this picture: the girls were unbearable, John Cusack's role was moronic, immature, insane. The girls' uncle was a bad influence for everybody and showed a big unsatisfaction with his life. The film is depressing but never touching. Clint Eastwood's music worked in Million Dollar Baby, in this movie the score is more of the same formula with the big difference that here the music sounds terribly incoherent. The film deserved better luck with 2007's Razzies.

A poignant film that left me with the feeling that it could have perhaps been more. A "little" film with certain moments but not really enough to move me substantially in any way.
