Just wanted to post a quick rundown of my reviews for this weekend. Click on the movie titles to see the full reviews at Film School Rejects:

Blades of Glory (Grade: A)
"...one hilarious ride through the incredibly uncomfortable world of man on man figure skating. If you are a Will Ferrell fan, then this is an easy choice."

Meet the Robinsons (Grade: B+)
"...while the acquisition of Pixar has certainly rubbed off on Disney, there is still some of that old Disney flair for those of us who remember films like The Lion King and The Little Mermaid."

The Lookout (Grade: B-)
"Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues his trend of breaking away from being that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun moving towards being a serious dramatic presence on the silver screen."

Have fun at the movies this weekend!

Disney got everything right this time. Boasting breathtaking 3D animation coupled with a heartwarming tale and wonderful songs and score, Meet the Robinsons is a delightful treat for children and adults alike. Forget Chicken Little and Home on the Range. This one may not be as good as the Pixar flicks, but it's a classic that truly deserves to be treasured.

The first effort in the new Pixar/Disney Animation universe hit theatres today - Meet the Robinsons. I'm sure you have seen some kind of commercial for the movie (the talking T-Rex which makes my wife and I crack up every time). Since it had been such a long time since a good kids movie had come out, we were looking forward to bringing the kids to this G-Rated flick.

It started kind of weird. The movie has been promoted as taking place in the future, and much of it did. But at least the first third took place in what passed for "modern times." The modern scenes were good, but not very funny. The future scenes were zany, but not very funny. Actually, when I think about it, the movie itself was not very funny. There were long stretches that were dramatic, tense, sweet, emotional, and silly. But it was not extremely funny. I don't know how much of a goal it was to Disney, but it failed if it was. Actually, I laughed pretty hard at the previews - and then snickered at the T-Rex. But that was that.

Then came the difficulty of the story. Well, I had figured out just about everything about 30 minutes into the movie. Since it was a kids' movie, that shouldn't be surprising. But the twists and turns were not very twisty or turny. The other gripe I had was how the movie dealt with the whole issue of time travel and the space/time continuum. There have always been certan understandings in the sci-fi world about how time travel would work. There are guidelines. You don't talk to or interact with your future self. When problems cause the future to change, EVERYTHING changes. You don't tell the dude from the past about the future because it will screw things up. Well, this movie just completely ignored all those rules. I was sitting there thinking, "Man that can't happen." Of course, it was a kids' movie about time travel - realism was not a prerequisite.

Then there was the originality issue. There were ripoffs galore throughout the movie - unless they will call them homages. Various scenes almost directly re-shot scenes from Robots, Jurrassic Park, Back to the Future, The Matrix, Matrix Revolutions, Matrix Reloaded, Larry Boy and the Bad Apple.... At one point, I was convinced the movie makers had been watching the Matrix trilogy and then drawing up scenes.

So why did I give the movie a positive grade? Overall, the movie was fun and good. There were some good messages - especially about trying hard, adoption, treating others well, persistence, not wearing bowler hats. The kids enjoyed it. The music was pretty good. And I honestly liked the vision of the future that was not decimated and negative. I had a good time - and that is important sometimes in a movie. The movie was waaaay better than Chicken Little. There were some scenes that was a little tense for a G-rated film. But my 3 & 5 year olds did not freak out. In the pathetic list of choices for families, The Robinsons are not a bad option to hold you over until the summer.

Meet The Robinsons is a movie about a boy named Louis who is an orphan and he is also a scientist. he travels to the future with Wilbur Robinson, who happens to be his future son that he doesn't know about. Wilbur and Louis must work together to try and get the time machine back from the bowler hat guy before he ruins Louis's life. this was a great film. i really really enjoyed it, and it was great that they attached an old disney cartoon to it before showing the film. that was awesome just to get a few minutes to relive the glory days. Trailers were Underdog, Shrek the Third, and Ratatouille. i would recommend it for the family and those who love pet dinosaurs

The 3-D was really technically well done. Between the storyline and 3-D technology the movie should be a winner for the whole family. If this is the start of what we will see from the Disney-Pixar marriage then there definitly is a bright future ahead for Disney Feature Animation.

MEET THE ROBINSONS
MY RATING: Y7: For comic violence and some brief mild language
YEAR: 2007
ACK!!! This isn't happening! Somebody, tell me this isn't happening! My 4th most anticipated film of the year! Why?! Why, oh Disney, did you do this to us?

Meet the Robinsons could have been the best animated film of the year, but here's a comprehensive shortened list of what's wrong with it:
Script: Geese, Louise! This is a terrible script! Nothing makes sense! You have useless lines and jokes that make for awkward pauses every five seconds when you think, Am I supposed to laugh?
Characters. Maybe they want us to feel for Goop, but in reality, I didn't really care what happened to him. And Bowler Hat Guy; I don't care about him. I hate him. NO, not because he's bad. He just makes bad puns. HATE HIM.
Plot: Some MAJOR issues here. No plot W.H.A.T.S.O.E.V.E.R!
Speed: Oh, dear. I have a headache after watching this. To me, this just seemed like a mess of images and sounds that made no sense. I felt like a child with ADD watching this. I'm dazed and confused, now. Disney needs to make like Pixar and HAVE. PAUSES. It's okay. The kids aren't going to hate you for it.
Here is what I liked about it:
Luis. I thought him a good character. And Wilber is pretty good, too.
It SLOOOOOOOOOWWSS DOWWWWWWWWWN at the end. VERY nice touch.
All in all, it had some comedic moments, but it just didn't compare to a Pixar film. Oh, and this is NOT an improvement over Chicken Little, however, I liked it MUCH more than the Wild.
Anyway, a 7.5 seems fitting. I don't think that this will get nominated for the Oscar. I'm thinking Simpsons will take the third nod, behind Shrek 3 and Ratatouille.

Meet the Robinsons

This was the movie that I took my daughter to for her father/daughter afternoon. She loved it. It really is one of my favorite Disney movies in a while. I'm not really sure how to explain why it's my favorite but it is. There is something that is just plain appealing about the messages of the movies themes. The character and their acceptance of a young boy who is having identity and self worth problems was wonderful. Keep Moving Forward.

Bizzare as they are the characters were all fun and entertaining, even the villan. I loved that the villan, this almost classic 1920's looking villan in black with the handle bar mustache and bowler hat had a little note book with a unicorn pony head on it was delightful. That he drowned his sorrows at a restaraunt that was Pony theme'd restaraunt just like his notebook was spectacular.
