I loved this film. I loved all of the characters and what they brought to the film.
Gil with his seeing the value of the past in terms of contribution to art and his romantic, poetic soul. Inez and her family who see the value of the past in terms of monetary value and valuing the present confined to their comfort zone. Adriana who like Gil sees the value of the past but fails to have the epiphany that Gil has in realizing the past will always seem more glorious then the present but always looking to past will have you miss chances at life in the present.
What I loved most about a movie like this is that while it's about the beautiful history of Paris at the heart of the film it's bigger than Paris. It's about time itself. We all tend to miss the years past we all have our "roaring 20s" and "Belle Époque" though for some of us it's high school, our childhood, college, the first few years of a relationship... nostalgia is important to value the past and what it can teach us, what it brought, but to never forget the value of the present and the adventure that we must choose to have so that it isn't unsatisfactory.
The way I see it if Hemingway, Picasso, Fitzgerald all became burdened with the golden age of the past then they might not have been able to produce the works they are most known for that captured bits of present life in all its realness. Part of living life to the fullest is to love the past for what it brings us but to never forget the richness of present life and what it can bring us....that the present and future can be as fulfilling and adventurous, that we have to live in the here and now, make memories... and when we are old and gray remember the golden age of our lives when we lived a life, had loves, adventures, etc.
