This is an odd film. I watched because I'd heard it was a cult classic.Slowly but surely I am beginning to realise that just because something is a 'cult classic' it doesn't automatically mean that it is good. A cult film can have a small but highly devoted audience and that audience can be weeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiirrddd, maaaaannnnn... ;) Visually, the film is a dark Burtonesque on acid thing so I loved this part of it. Storywise it could have been a lot shorter and well, cruder..(is this a word? SURELY it is...) It's not amazingly funny but it had me laughing in places. The acting is quite flat but in this film the acting is secondary to the effects. Generally speaking, a bad thing, but the effects are very well done and. Brendan Fraser as the hero is terribly bland (quite possibly the point) but very believable when possessed by an id-created sexually obsessed monkey..Bridget Fonda's chracter is boring but is a believable love interest. Whoopi Goldberg is the suckiest Death ever conceived..

So...I don't really know what to say or how to descibe it.I mean it's right up my alley. So to speak.I should be raving. Meh.

Right. Um. Yes.

It's a failure! But I don't care... it's very watchable. Even though it sucks.
Rose McGowan is HOTT as a cat, and Chris Kattan was actually fairly funny.
Henry Salick directs without help from producer Tim Burton and comes across as... a poor man's Tim Burton. Oh Henry.

ODDBALL FILM, INTERESTING CAST, WILDLY IMAGINATIVE, BUT ALSO REPULSIVE AT TIMES. OVERALL UNAPPEALING. A REAL MIXED BAG HERE.

I am angry:mad: not at the movie or directors, but at the harsh critics who picked apart the movie and all in all failed to see any humor in the movie. I thought that Monkeybone was all in all a hilarious movie that, although snagging in a couple of plot problems, should be rated a lot higher. The animation was more than acceptable for the time it was released, and think it fully deserves an eight out of ten, never mind what brainless newspaper critics think.

I am amazed at the low reviews of this film. Although it is not a great film or even a memorable film, 'Monkeybone' had some pretty funny content and a pretty good story. It could have been better, but this is just a comedy film we are talking about here. The concept is a good one: man is going to propose to girlfriend but ends up in a coma where he is trying to escape from a fantasy cartoon world filled with unusual characters. It's been a few years since I have seen it, and I do admit that the film was not that memorable, but again, it is just a comedy, and I did think they did a pretty good job with this one.
