There was no need to make 3 films 2 would have been sufficient to tell this story brilliantly and this was in fact the original plan. Now at times the film simply feels like it is filling in for time and there are quite a few scenes that are simply unnecessary and this is coming from a person who has loved this book for 15 years. I also have to say it isn't a "huge" book compared to LOTR its really very short. To put it into perspective I was able to read it at the age of 5 in the space of a week. Don't get me wrong though I do love the world of Middle Earth and all the wonders that go along with it and I think Martin Freeman simply IS The Hobbit. But this film still lacks something. I don't know I suppose it's simply that it could never compete with the original LOTR trilogy. One can only hope that the introduction of Benedict Cumberbatch will change my view.

4 hours agoA heart warming tale about a 13 yr old witch who has to go live in a city for a year to learn new skills and magic. And we are treated to see how she makes new friends, finds a job and struggles with balancing work and a social life. Lots of subtle moments within the stories that give a really enriching experience and depth to characters. One of the best studio gibli stories. Everyone should give it a go! Brilliant for all ages!
