Even Sir Conan Doyle wrote plots heavily police oriented!
I have not felt this series was being hyped up at all - in fact I found out about it searching for the other (very good) BBC version they sadly discontinued.
This Sherlock Holmes may be a variation on the same theme, granted. But he is far from having been portrayed as knowing every answer.
I'm sure I could split hair finding faults, or play purist dismissing anything not as per the original. But what for?!
I watch it because I like it, and in this case immensely.
There is always the old versions in case of nostalgia...

People are unique and have different opinions, and that is what makes for lively discussion. I personally disagree. If they can make 7 Fast and Furious films (!!??#*%*$), 9 Nightmare on Elm Streets, and 23 James Bond films, I don't see how anyone could have a problem with breaking a classic and beloved book into three gorgeous films. Even if it could have been completed in two, why does it matter? The way Peter Jackson directs is magic, and no scene is superfluous. I do agree that the LOTR trilogy was epic, and I'm not sure yet if The Hobbit will be able to rise to the level of that tale. We shall see.
