I decided to watch an interesting double-feature on DVD last week -- two of my favorite two movies from the last two years: Lost in Translation followed by Moulin Rouge. These movies could not possibly any more different but are brilliant in their own individual ways.

I had another double-feature today: Fahrenheit 9/11 at the Metreon (packed to the gills) followed by Primary Colors on cable. I guess you guys can probably guess my political leanings by my ratings.

primary colors is the best political satire i've seen in a long time.
the cast is terriffic john travolta, adrian lester, kathy bates, emma thompson
and billy bob thornton are all excellent.
the script by elaine may is very funny.
mike nichols direction is flawless and wonderful.

the movie follows the campaign trail of polictical nominee jack stanton.
the road traveled to the campaign is awesome and very funny.

before there was primary colors there was another political satire called
wag the dog.
wag the dog was not as funny or as good as primary colors.
if you're searching for a political satire to rent on video or dvd
make it primary colors.

primary colors is one of the funniest political films i've ever seen.

EXCELLENT DRAMA, DRAGS A BIT TOWARD THE END, BUT HAS SOME AMAZING PERFORMANCES, ESPECIALLY BATES, THOMPSON AND THORNTON. I FEEL THIS IS JOHN TRAVOLTA'S BEST PERFORMANCE.

This was an amazing movie. All the cast was great. John Travolta, Emma Thompson, Kathy Bates, Adrian Lester, Billy Bob Thornton, Maura Tierney, Paul Guilfoyle, Larry Hagman and Caroline Kaufman. John Travolta, Emma Thompson and Kathy Bates deliver award winning performances. This movie is one of the best movies of 1998.

Overall score: 10/10 :fresh:

Academy Award Nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Bates), Best Adapted Screenplay

Some movies warrant a second viewing and this smart political satire is certainly one of them. Having enjoyed the likes of Bulworth, Wag the Dog and the like I thought i'd revisit this thinly-veiled fictionalised account of the rise of the Clintons. The author of the source novel remained anonymous for years until New York Times Reporter Joe Klein owned up. It's a shame that he hasn't written anything since as this stands head and shoulders above the raft of political satires to emerge from Hollywood since the nineties. With the many instances of American actors having a try at a British accent (received pronunciation of course) it's good here to see two Brits cast in leading roles; Adrian Lester of British TV series Hustle fame and Emma Thompson as the First Lady in Waiting. Indeed as political campaign man Henry Burton, Lester has the lead role as its through him that we the viewer examine the mechanics of a presidential primary campaign. The cast is like a roll call of top names from the acting world, John Travolta appearing as Senator Jack Stanton after close friend of the Clintons Tom Hanks declined to appear in the movie. Aside from the talent already mentioned, fleshing out the ensemble there's Maura Tierney, Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Larry Hagman and Diane Ladd. Jack Stanton is a charismatic and engaging character and Travolta certainly has what it takes to pull off the role. Aside from this he's also a serial womaniser, something that threatens to scupper his chances of running for president as the campaign threatens to turn into a sleazefest. Burton's eyes are opened to the realities of what it takes to become President of the United States and time and time again we see the sweet-talking of Stanton doing the trick of keeping him onboard the battle bus. Slightly too long at two hours twelve but the movie never sags and all and sundry have a high old time satirising the game of politics. If only there were more grey matter massages like this around, movie-making of today would be in rude health.
