I like the movie I just dont love it. Dustin Hoffman does a great job, but Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise in every movie. He's like a Barbie, heres Tom, here he is in the Navy, here he is driving cars, etc. But overall its a good movie and worth watching, and on to more quick reviews.

Rain Man is the story of Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise) whose father dies and subsequently, learns that he has an older, autistic brother (Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman). At first, Charlie is only interested in Ray for the money he inherited ($3 million), but as the story progresses, he comes to find that he actually feels love for his brother, despite the annoyances and difficulties in caring for him.

This movie could have easily pushed the sap too far, and it could have failed miserably. But it didn't--this film succeeds. Tom Cruise plays asshole Charlie Babbit to absolute perfection, and successfully and believably conveys his changing emotions throughout the film. Dustin Hoffman's performance as Ray is a true accomplishment--he pulled it off to perfection--it never feels forced or faked.

The truly defining moment of this film comes when Charlie and Ray are waiting to talk to the doctors, and their foreheads meet. They just stay like that, serene, for a few moments--that's when you know. Charlie's completely forgiven for his assholeness previously, in that one moment. It's cathartic.

Rain Man is in my Top Ten films.

TROY: ***.5 Visually astounding, not plagued by clunky dialogue found in other epics, nom-worthy performance from Bana; still feels emotionally detached and suffers pacing problems.

RAIN MAN (2nd): ****.5 Terrific performances from leads; manages to craft an engaging film out of a static character; Cruise's transition is excellently done.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN: ****.5 Perfectly atmospheric with incredible camera work and cinematography; great performances all around (especially from Thelewis) and special effects that approach photorealism; suffers only from some loose plot threads that should have been altered for the screenplay.

GOOD WILL HUNTING: ****.5 The story has been done before, but never with this much emotion, dignity, and intelligence. Williams and Damon turn in the perforamcnes of their careers and the scenes between them are filled with smart, snappy dialogue that strikes emotional chords. For once, an inspirational movie that truly inspires.

Rain Man is one of my favorite films. Yet, it is just a shade or two from greatness.

Rain Man

Starring: Tom Cruise as Raymond Babbitt
Dustin Hoffman as Charlie Babbitt
Valeria Golina as Susanna
Story by: Barry Morrow
Screenplay by: Morrow and Ronald Bass
Directed by: Barry Levinson

The story of Rain Man is about two brothers that are reunited after their father's death. The catch is Raymond never knew about Charlie, as Charlie is an Autistic, and has been locked away in a institution for years. Charlie inherited the large sum of his father's estate and Ray feels slighted by this.

However, when Ray "kidnaps" Charlie and attempts to gain custody, he realizes there is more to life than money.

As a feel-good film, the movie pays off. You're happy about where these characters wind up as the credits roll. The fact it's not a typical happy ending only adds to that. Levinson is a steady director and knows how to manipulate an audience.

The scenes I love are the Las Vegas scenes, the K-Mart road sequence, and watching Judge Wopner with the large Mid-West family. It is in this, the mixing of humor with drama, that Levinson and the film suceed. However, the main detractor is Hoffman. It's just an easy role to portray in my estimation. Leonardo DeCaprio and Sean Penn have both played similar roles to similar ends. All three were nominated for Academy Awards (only Hoffman won).

This does not take away from the simple power of a film that shows that family is always family, whenever you find them in life.

"Never gets dated. Never gets old. A timeless film about the power of family."
