Rebel Without a Cause

about: A sci-fi about a future where one's destiny is determined by one's genetic perfection. Class and achievement are controlled by genes. Those with the good genes are given preference to those with poor genes. The story details how a determined man with bad genes (Ethan Hawke) tries to beat the system. He gets help from a man with perfect genes (Jude Law) but who can't make the most of them because despite the potential in his genes, he is paralyzed.
positive: Well executed futuristic concept that provides a compelling allegorical tale.
negative: There is a weak murder sub plot and Uma thurman is underutilized.

Well after two months of doing absolutely nothing, I find myself back in school. I skipped my school's month long Winter Session this year because I really don't care for the quick pace of the Winter/Summer classes. While I will miss sleeping in until 11 AM everyday, I must say I am very happy to once again have a reason to leave the house for five days a week.

This year will be my first year writing for the school's newspaper. The great thing about this is the fact that they are letting me write on my two favorite subjects, Movies and Sports. I am now my schools Movie Critic, which means I will get to go to movies with the school paying for my entrance. Yeah ME

I found Rebel Without a Cause to be typical teenage fair way too light for my taste. Knife fights? Playing chicken? Definately not my kind of movie.

Dean's good, but the story's dated. Odd ending, other than that it's fairly good.

The World According to Bush (9/10)

BWAAAAHAAAAHAAAAHAAAAAHAAA!!!!! *wipes eyes*

Made by the guy who did Ghost World, and from an original idea from the Coen brothers. This is an absolutely inappropriate comedy about a drinking, swearing, wenchin and carousin felon of a Santa. It is bloody hilarious, and is redeemed by the fact it actually has character development and a plot, its nbot just a series of gross-out gags. All the actors do a great job, John Ritter is especially good in his role as the conservative mall manager. The child they chose (above) is fantastic as the boy who just wants a real family.

The banners are all over the place, but they're so pretty..

I love Rebel, but sadly I just don't enjoy the other two. Except for Dean's performance. East of Eden was too ripping and sad.. and Giant was pretty much the same way. All of them featured places that were to be escaped from, to me.

A story of three teenagers who manage to find comfort and real friendship with each other within their lonely and misunderstood lives, Rebel Without a Cause stars James Dean, who was immortalized in playing the red-coated, rebellious and confused Jim Stark. Nicholas Ray's coming of age film puts three characters in a one-night journey of self-discovery and tragedy, as their convenient meeting in a police station starts a strong relationship with each other. Each has a story of their own to which they all can easily relate to, with their ignorant and sometimes cruel parents. They understand each other, and for one small moment, quite literally make a family consisting of only themselves in an abandoned mansion.

The story isn't exactly original (though, it probably was back then), but it still holds up to this day. Instead of the characters whining and moaning about all their problems (some of which makes for a fairly intelligent comedy that hardly works anymore these days), they do something about it. The performances of James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo makes these characters very realistic, making the impact of the events all the more tragic.

The brilliant cinematography perfectly captures all the locations, and is perfect with the tone and story of the film. Shot in Cinemascope with a longer aspect ratio than what we're used to (2.55:1), the wide angles excellently capture all the characters, and the drama between them works better because of this. The editing as well helps, like Jim's confession to his parents on the stairs.

Nicholas Ray handles the story very well, and understands the characters more (although, it's up to the actors to interpret these characters). The drama, especially in the last few moments, is handled so excellently without ever feeling forced or exaggerated. Needless to say, all the actors are simply outstanding. Ray puts these characters in a position of failure and tragedy, to which they achieve retribution, faith and understanding among them. It's also because of their actions and somewhat unique characteristics that the actors themselves, since they so successfully interpret such memorable characters, are immortalized in their roles despite some having a much, much longer career run than others. It's no surprise that the movie as well achieves classic status and is remembered up to this day.

The subject of misunderstood teenagers torn from today's society has been handled more realistically and even more violently (albeit a tad too over-the-top) in the last few years. It has evolved, and the problems are more serious than what it probably was back then, but Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause can be considered as the first one to handle it. Like its title, most of the actions are all effects without causes, and by the end of the day, these characters find a better comfort along each other than with their very families (or lack thereof), even though it isn't strong enough to (literally or emotionally) save them.
