Saw some flicks over the weekend...

Bad Santa- definitely the work of some warped minds. Good offensive fun.

50 First Dates - Cute little romcom. A kinder, gentler Sandler. Didn't really care for the way it ended, but meh...

Monster - Charlize Theron alone makes the movie worth watching. It truly is an exceptional performance, right up there, in my mind, with Brando in Last Tango in Paris. But, outside of that, the movie's pretty pedestrian.

Field of Dreams - Simply one of the best movies made. A magical ride about hopes, desires, mending family bonds, and baseball.

The Fog of War - Superb documentary from America's best documentary filmmaker, Errol Morris. A brutal look at the life and wars of Robert McNamara, as told by the man himself. Unflinching and honest. This is a movie that could do more for any anti-war movement than Michael Moore and his blatant heartstring tugging and shaky half-truths. Go see this one right away.

All I got today... only half-an-hour for lunch.

The Fog Of War: Eleven Lessons From the Life Of Robert S. McNamara won the Oscar 2004 for Best Documentary. I'd heard a lot about this documentary before, lots of praise, but it took me really this long until I finally got the movie. It's not gonna be available in Germany before August this year also.

I must say, this movie is quite some tough stuff to watch. When I first started watching it I didn't have the patience to listen closely, so I waited until a day on which I didn't have anything else to deal with to be able to sit down and watch the movie in full length really listening. I think it's not a story you can just watch, you should really take the time to listen. This is not meant to be entertaining in any way, it's pure information and conclusion.

The film is about the former US Secretary of Defence, Robert S. McNamara, and the various lessons he learned about the nature and conduct of modern war partly by making his own mistakes. I think it is great, I admire the honesty of this documentary. I thank Robert S. McNamara for this project and having spoken openly.

A visually adept, enjoyable anti fairytale. The references and spoofs, ranging from boxing to the MATRIX, are a hoot. Its refreshingly different from the Disney mould of characters. Children can enjoy the action while adults take glee in the real world references. Add in the moral about seeing beyond the surface and we have a fun, enjoyable piece of animation.

Not much in this movie that is shocking or something I didn't know before. I still find history extemely entertaining.

Brilliantly made documentary, very close to the pedigree of Bowling for Columbine.

I loved the lessons it had to give, and how relevant it was.

DIAGNOSIS: Good!
The Fog of War is a movie detailing the life of Robert McNamara and his career as advisor to both President Kennedy and Johnson. The film involves an extensive narrative provided by McNamara himself which serves as a focus and narrative for the entire documentary.
This movie is for anyone interested in what it takes to think strategically about war, or anyone interested in McNamara's involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Vietnam War. Also, this film informed me like never before about the extent of damage done to Japan during World War II, at which time McNamara served as a strategist.
I really enjoyed this movie and the main reason is McNamara himself. He has a very distinct air about him, and despite being in his mid-eighties, he is very coherent and energetic.
Since the film is about McNamara and McNamara is such an interesting individual and the filmmakers do such a good job of capturing his presence, the film succeeds.
