This animated movie of the Hobbit is funny and great for light watching, but it does not take the story seriously and edits out some of my favorites parts. The animation is sometimes just laughable (in a good sort of way), but altogether, I wish there was more story and less singing built into this movie.

Yeah! Peter Jackson is doing The Hobbit! It will be released next year sometime. TOTALLY psyched to see it bc IMO The Hobbit is even better than LOTR in certain aspects!

How many Hobbits have I dealt with in my life? There's the book, of course, and I've got a six-cassette "audiobook" version done by the BBC (I think), and my high school once put it on as a play, and now there are rumors of Peter Jackson doing the prelude to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy... and then, of course, there's this animated movie.

Simply put: A hobbit is a tiny little guy who lives in relative peace and quiet back in the days of "Middle-Earth". The titular character is Bilbo Baggins, who is dragged out of his sedentary life on very short notice and is dragged off across the countryside by Gandalf, the crotchety old wizard, and thirteen dwarves (hence the need for Bilbo, since thirteen is an unlucky number). At the theoretical end of their journey is the dragon Smaug, who sleeps on the dwarves' treasure hoard. In between are every aspect of fantasy you care to name: happy elves, mean elves, giant monsters, friendly monsters, narrow escapes, magic swords, the works. (Man, Tolkien really ripped off AD&D, didn't he?) (Yes, that was a joke.)

The movie is clearly aimed at kids, and I did enjoy this movie when I saw it as a kid. Even then, though, I had already read the book and was disappointed at some of the cuts they made, though I see clearly why they were made. A lot of what I liked as a child - the style of animation, the songs of Glenn Yarbrough of the Limeliters in the background, the interchanges between the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf - still stands up after all this time, though.

This is definitely a good movie for kids, but adults should read the book instead. Or, eventually and with any luck, go see the movie. I really hope they keep Beorn in this time...

Happy Thanksgiving, all! :D

This animated film was required viewing for us in school when I was about 12-years-old and after we had finished reading the book 'The Hobbit'. At the time, I found this to be an enjoyable film which was very true to the story. In my later teens, this film was on television, and I had the opportunity to watch it again, and I did not enjoy it nearly as much as I did when I was younger. While it is true to the story, I think that this animation is best enjoyed through the eyes of a child and not through the eyes of an adult or a teenager. A lot of it was just silly, and I did not think very much of the animation. Don't expect too much.

At points, it's just as epic as The Lord of the Rings, but, most of the time, it's very annoying, especially with all of the songs included. Skip this movie.
