If Robert Redford has ever directed a bad movie I haven't seen it and having checked his filmography on imdb only The Milagro Beanfield War has eluded me. Quiz Show was excellent and i enjoyed Ordinary People and A River Runs Through It. This was Kristin Scott Thomas's next movie after her Oscar nominated turn in The English Patient and it's a pity that her leading lady credentials somewhat stalled in the late nineties after she made the poorly received Random Hearts with Harrison Ford. Here she's Redford's leading lady, married to Sam Neill, mother to Scarlett Johansson who is left physically and emotionally crippled after a horse riding accident, portrayed in an impressively realistic manner. A 13/14 year old Johansson is predictably phenomenal in a role which, if unconvincingly played, could have scuppered the whole enterprise. Some beautiful Montana vistas and eye-catchingly artful shots add spades to the movie experience. With great supporting work from the likes of Dianne Wiest and Chris Cooper added to the mix, this is a two hours plus movie in which every moment is worth treasuring. Unfairly dismissed as romantic schlock, this turns out to be a wholly satisfying, well-rounded movie experience.

directed by and starring robert redford...story of a horrific accident resulting in a wounded horse, a wounded girl and two broken spirits...the injured girl's mother, played wonderfully by kristin scott thomas, is a neurotic over-achiever working as a high-powered magazine editor in nyc... both her daughter and the horse are deeply scarred physically and emotionally from the tragedy, and her relationship with her husband is strained... impulsively, she takes both the girl and horse out to montana to see a "horse whisperer," a person with a gift of seeing inside the horse's soul... all key roles were filled perfectly- especially scarlett johannson playing the troubled daughter...this is a deeply moving film, it is intense and powerful in exploring the journey of regaining trust and healing the soul... in addition to the powerful storyline and exceptional performances, the movie is visually stunning

Beautifully shot film with good performances. The big mistakes in the film are slow pace, overlength and prefering to show uninteresting love story rather then girl`s healing process. The love story is dull on three reasons: Sam Neill`s character is too sympathetic, Redford once again plays Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas` character is too annoying. But Scarlett Johansson plays brilliant and Montana landscapes are breathtaking.
