Was that to make fun of Jacques Cousteau ?
..As you can always expect from the American.
I watched the movie by putting aside my assumptions, and I liked it, really. So yeah, the movie is great but I'm a little sad to see That French people are still derided like that.
Cousteau's work was a real revolution at this time
Anyway,voilà.

This lovely film kinda hooks you in with beauty, then the cast rolls on, and Defoe totally steals the whole picture. It’s got everything, drama, laughter, surrealism, warmth, beautiful scenery. And it's making absolute sense by not making any sense at all. Thanks for the link. =) 8/10

OK, so I know alot of people felt like this wasn't 'The Royal Tennenbaums' and because of that felt that it wasn't really worth watching. I cannot disagree more. For those who are familiar with Jacques Cousteau, and the silliness that was some of TV work, this movie pokes fun at it in the best possible way, and uses Bill Murrays insanely dry sense of humor to take it up a notch. Also, it is the only movie I have seen where Owen Wilson plays the straight, and he does a great job of it! Who knew he could actually do something other than play himself. He even has an accent!

The rest of the characters are great and the soundtrack is awesome. Loved this one!

i've heard that this wasn't one of wes andersons better films, which is why i waited so long to see it. i knew i would like it at least a little bit because i like all his other movies but i didnt know i would like it this much. it might not be as good as rushmore but it was still better than most movies out there. basically if you like any of wes andersons movies, even at all, you should see this movie. you wont be dissapointed.

I really did like this movie. It wasn't perfect, but it was beautiful, funny, sad, and wonderful, sometimes all at the same time.
The plot is simple. Steve Zissou, who, after watching this film, I am certainly could only have been realized fully by Bill Murray, is an oceanographer whose films have become progressively more dour and dull as his personal life crumbles underneath him and his loved ones leave him. On his previous voyage, his best friend was (or wasn't) eaten by a sort of spotted shark, and Zissou sets out to find it and kill it.
This is a very sad film at times, and a very funny film at other times, but I think that the balance is fair, as it was in The Royal Tenenbaums, which was slightly better.
The animation, by Henry Selick, who recently worked on Coraline, of the various fantastic sea creatures, is hauntingly beautiful. It looks fake, but perhaps it's meant to.
I really do love Wes Anderson. His films so deftly move from drama to comedy and back in seconds like a German sports car switching gears that it's really amazing to watch. I like how you can tell instantly and easily from glancing at a still from any point in any of his movies that you are looking at a Wes Anderson film. He carefully constructs each shot, often still, like a formal portrait, with the subject often staring straight into the camera. In this style, the character of Steve Zissou penetrates through the screen and his sadness becomes almost tactile. This is one of Anderson's saddest films, and one of his most mixed in reviews. I can see why. Some things feel tacked on, and not all of it works.
I wish that the relationship between Zissou and Hennessey, his rival, was better developed, but it might have forced the film down a narrative path that would have hurt it in the long run. Towards the end, I felt entropy in the film, and although this may have been deliberate (to mirror Zissou's personal and professional entropy) it makes the film feel drawn out a bit.
In conclusion, although some of it feels strange, too slow, or not right, see this film. It's not Anderson's best, but it's still a great film, and it should not be missed.

Wed Anderson's fourth effort 'The Aquatic Life' is a unique experience to date.
Introducing us to a faux-documentary movie maker in a fake ceremony, The Aquatic Life already experiments with the genre, and already shows us a half-plastic world evolving around a brillant cast. Bill Murray is the Steve Zissou leading this great aquatic family, and brings us to a weird boat, where we follow him and his mates.
During half the movie, we don't really know where the movie is bringing us to, and it's one of the strongest aspect of Wes Anderson's cinema. But there is a question I am asking here: is it really a movie ? It looks more like a lot of saynettes, evolving around one theme, the family (everyone wanting to be recognizer for who he is and what he does here), but still being unique because of the unity of place and characters.
For sure, even if we know what they are looking for, there is a moment during the movie when we don't know if this really is what the film is about, but Anderson still keeps us till the end, for a magnificent and highly stylised ending.
I really think The Life Aquatic deserves his five stars rating, and needs to be more recognized ! Funny and intelligent, sweet and sour, finally brillant.

Very eccentric, but I enjoyed it. And of course Sigur Ros is always a win.

Utterly hilarious. I don't see why so many people don't like this movie. Wonderfully dry, quirky, and memorable - plus Bill Murray is the man! Wes Anderson in solid form.

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was completely boring but as I watched it for a second time, years later, I fell in love with the bizarre styled story that Wes Anderson created. So if you have only seen this movie once and did not enjoy it, I advise you to watch it a second time and maybe you will gain more respect for it.
