A solid drama with good performances but in my humble opinion it is probably Paul Thomas Anderson's least compelling film. The opinions of Tom Cruise and John Travolta would probably be more interesting than mine though...

Good drama with Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the lead roles. Might be a bit slow paced but that just gives you time to think about the story. And, it's a thinker for sure. Thanks to Sundial for the recommendation.

Whenever Paul Thomas Anderson releases a new film, it's a time for celebration. His previous efforts Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood took time to win me over but they eventually became some of my favorite films. The Master grabbed me from the first viewing. Maybe it's because I'm more accustomed to Anderson's style and have adapted to it over the course of four films, but I think The Master might be his most compelling film yet. Phillip Seymour Hoffman continues to prove himself the master of these shadowy, enigmatic, and very charismatic types. He's not quite a villain in The Master but he's not quite the grand saint he appears to be. There's something complex about Lancaster Dodd and there many shades of grey that are fascinating to sift through. Joaquin Phoenix's character seems more straightforward, he's a loose cannon dealing with past demons. Everyone in this film seems to be running away from something and that's what makes it such a compelling watch.

I must say I agree with you on all counts @panty_hampster. Maybe my expectations were too high after waiting so long but seriously it was too long and pointless, other than Philip Seymour Hoffman (who can do no wrong in my eyes!)it really was a let down, unfortunately.

This is one slow ass movie. But solid.
