Thursday, May 15th 2003:
went to the movies early this morning -- I just had to see The Matrix Reloaded, and the mall was packed -- all of them were there to see the same film -- crammed into the middle row of the auditorium, next to some excited strangers, having brief discussion with the guy sitting next to me about how awesome the movie was going to be -- never had that happen during a screening -- the day was worthwhile if only because of the warm, communal vibe running through the screening -- the trailers weren't too bad either -- everyone laughed at the ad that played before the trailers -- it was an Agent telling us about the benefits of drinking Powerade. Then, we got the Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle trailer with that terrific song My Sharona! One of the best trailers I've seen all year. And, then the movie began.
Long story short, the movie had some incredible action sequences, I'm going to see it again as often as I can until the end of the summer because of that Burly Brawl sequence with all of those Agent Smith clones, and also because of that jaw-dropping freeway chase (one of the best action sequences of all time). The not-so-good part was the boring story. This is one of those movies where I'd like to just quiet all of the dialogue scenes (and there are a lot of them) -- and watch nothing but the arresting visuals and the spectacular set-pieces. Actually, I'd turn the sound back on for those action moments, it really puts you in the center of things.
Also, I simply must buy the soundtrack. I'm going to play that CD until it breaks. Great action cues.
The movie ended with a preview for The Matrix Revolutions, and I hope it's as good as the first one, because as much as I enjoyed seeing The Matrix Reloaded, it just wasn't on the same level as the one that started it all.

The second movie in the Matrix trilogy. The Machine Army is in search of Zion now that the Matrix has been exposed.

The twins were my favorite. They were super cool! Besides the twins, I'll just say that it isn't as good as the first one, but it could be because it is setting up the third one. It does end with a "To be Continued" type tag at the end. I thought it started out slow, but the fight scenes were awesome. The bad guy who employed the twins was very funny, but nothing is cooler than the twins warping in and out of existence. Neato!

There were also two cheesy scenes that just needed to go (love scene over the rave and the hand starting the heart scene), but still a good movie overall. Just not WOW like the first one (besides the twins). Did I mention that I liked the twins? I wanna do that. warp warp warp. weeeeeeeee!

Arg! Someone remind me not to ever get involved in real voice against voice arguments again! My body is just not built for the raising of the voice, frustration, and all of the other schmezz that goes along with it. The sad thing about it is that I knew I was being dragged into someone else's "game" , but I let it happen anyway. What a fool. All I have to show for it are a headache and a less than positive new view of my roommate.

On another note, I was suppossed to watch Habla Con Ella tonight, but as fate would have it I get the version with no stinking subtitles. So instead of watching a movie that might actually be good, I runn off to work on my drawing. Which is fine itself, but since my movie isn't on, someone else put theirs on. So I'm treated to about two hours of Techno music and expositious Monologues (if espositious isn't a word, I just created it.) from The Matrix Gang. At least I didn't have to watch it. I don't know if I could stand the sight of more black leather, big sunglasses, and flappy trenchcoats. But My God, who wrote that drivel? Sure the Wachowski's get the credit, but come on, I think it's a Taliban plot or something. Osama wrote that crud and threatened to shove a stick of dynamite up their arse if they spilled the beans. No but in all seriousness, I guess the final Monologue in the first movie, foreshadowed how bad the writing would be in the second. I shouldn't be surprised, and really I'm not. It's just annoying, so annoying that I think I'll take a set of keys to my roomies DVD tonight. Problem Solved.

Oh and in conclusion, I still can't draw.

The Matrix Reloaded 7/10

This sequel is plenty of fun. The film suffers from some fairly weak dialog, but makes up for it with some terrific action. It seems as if the film thinks that it is smarter than it is. I hope Revolutions is able to meet the expectations that the original set.

The Matrix Reloaded *** 1/2 (second viewing)
My rating remains the same on this film, but it could change drastically in a couple weeks. The problem with critiqueing the 2nd in a trilogy is you can't really judge how well it sets up the finale, until you've seen it. With that in mind, while I enjoy Reloaded and I think it will lead on to an even better Revolutions, I really can't judge it on it's own merit.

Pretty much all I can say for Reloaded right now is that I love the philosophical climax, and I hope this will lead to a deep finale. While there were many scenes I liked, there were a couple that were completely unnecessary, and I would rather they were cut or replaced with more exposition. The scene where Neo fights the Oracle's guard is the one that sticks in my mind the most. The park fight with Mr. Smith(s) also seemed unnecessary, but I did enjoy watching it nonetheless.

Dear god, I LOVE this film. All the bashers can just kiss my keister for all I care. They moan and complain when action films have no story or plot or brains, and when one does try to be more than that, they bash it too. Well, F 'em. I thought the story, the characters, and the plot were just first rate. I can't say enough good things about it, and the Brothers W deserve massive kudos for their work. My anticipation for Revolutions is just through the roof

ok, I'll admit, it was much better this time. The action was better (at least the freeway chase did), and the story made sense. Unfortunately, the effects got worse (or more noticeable). The acting still sucked though, and the rave/love-in I could do without.

Upgraded to **.75/****

The original was a pretty decent movie, and this is just like two more hours of that. Except, I didn't particularly want two more hours of it, and seriously doubt that the Wachorowski's (sp) had another two hours of story left. But screw two hours, the Brothers squeezed out four by throwing a bunch of redundant fight sequences, endless expository dialogue and no editing at all. On the plus side, they seem to have squeezed a few more hundred million out of the public. Kudos to the marketing team.
