Ewww! I can just hear the people now. When this movie debuted in '82, it must have been absolutely grotesque. The Thing has some of the best make up and effects that I have ever seen, which is even more remarkable considering the year it was made in. Although it is a remake, Carpenter has made something of his own here. Starring Kurt Russel, who does a solid job again, this movie is set in a cold and desolate Antarctica science research facility. The setting is actually one of my favorite parts of the movie. From the opening shots of the barren wasteland, you realize that these characters are going to be in big trouble once things start to go wrong. And you can bet that things go very, very wrong. The crew stumbles across an empty alien spacecraft that has crashed in the ice and from then on they are stalked by a terrifying creature. Here's the beauty of it though; this Thing attacks its victims by imitating whatever it can get itself into. In this case, the poor men stationed at the research facility. This is where the film excels, because the men are stuck in Antarctica in the middle of a snow storm just waiting for the Thing to make its next move. Another highlight of this movie is the great score from Ennio Morricone that captures the isolation and terror of this movie so well. Filled with some extremely tense scenes and great direction from John Carpenter, this movie tells a great story. The Thing is a Sci Fi/Horror Classic.

Purely original. Couldn't ask for more in a horror film, except a background, but you got to be able to just turn your brain off and enjoy.

One of the more intense Science Fiction/horror films ever made. Right up there with The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Terminator and other such films. This right in the middle of the 10 year window in which director John Carpenter was really hitting his stride. To me this and previous film Escape From New York are his best films even they I enjoy some of his other smaller films like Christine and Assault on Precinct 13.

Some of the younger crowd might find this movie boring despite the solid special effects that still hold up pretty well. No doubt, this movie is not quick to get to the finish, but if you love films that slowly build tension this movie is an outstanding watch. The cast is solid with some serious actors and a few campy performers like Keith David and T.K Carter.I will say that the campy performers add to the slow and dark film instead of taking away from it.

Overall, I can't put it in my top 50, but it's an outstanding movie just the same even though it was one of the last few quality projects that John Carpenter has made.

Wow. This flic still holds up - the 'graphics' are just now seeming dated. KRussell is great in it, and it's still very scary! Love it.

John Carpenter took a huge risk with this movie because remakes are usually Terrible adaptations of the original.

The Thing from another World was made in 1951 and was one of the first great Sci Fi movies.

So 30 years later this Film was made and its not only a worthy remake but one hell of a good film on its own.

Kurt Russel stars as MacReady, a Helicopter pilot who works at a Scientific Expedition base in Antarctica along with a dozen or so other Men.

The great thing about this movie is the Atmosphere.
Antarctica is the most Isolated place on the planet and over 1000 miles to Civilization so when something goes wrong..AND IT DOES......you know that they will be in serious trouble with almost no chance for help.

This movie has some of the Best Effects for a film made at that time.
Its amazing how they did some truly classic Gross out moments with a low Budget that surprises and scares you.

Why cant they make sci fi horror movies this good anymore.

One of the best horror/sci-fi films , which was quite faithful to the short story "who goes there " by john W. campbell.
