Amazing and personally, I preferred this prequel. I know a little weird, but I liked the story better and I totally loved the ending, just the last words. . . the keep on ringing in my mind. . . Such a dark movie! GREAT!

The cast did a good job in this movie. This movie is really scary, and a awesome action movie.

In some movies, the characters and plot are so far removed from our real life experiences, that the movie fails to make the human connection. Take Little Miss Sunshine for instance. Sure, it won plenty of awards from snobby critics, but who was that movie actually made for? How many of us actually go to beauty pageants, or drive vehicles, or have grandfathers? It was a movie made by the Hollywood elite, for the Hollywood elite.

And that's why Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a breath of fresh air. It's not about Hollywood fat cats, riding their VW buses across the country like millionaires. Watching Rise of the Lycans is like looking through a magical porthole into my own childhood.

My Dad used to be a vampire. He would stumble back home before dawn, with the powerful stench of human blood on his breath. Human blood smells awful; like a combination of whiskey and beer. He would sleep all day, and would complain whenever Mom turned on a light or opened the curtains.

One time I asked Mom if Dad didn't like the sunlight because it would turn him into ashes. She just started laughing, but then it turned into crying.

At night, Dad would rise from bed, and go into town looking for blood.

One night Dad was attacked by our next door neighbor's pet Lycan. It was a big, mean beast. They kept it chained up in the yard. Dad was coming home from such a big night of feasting on blood, that he thought our neighbor's house was his house. When his key didn't work on the front door, he had assumed that Mom had changed the locks again.

So Dad went around back to where he thought Mom's bedroom was, and threw a brick through the window, and started yelling. The noise woke up the sleeping Lycan, who bit Dad on the leg.

The police came. The Judge made Dad stop being a vampire after that.

Wow! This is what we are talking about! Classy production, in the spirit of the series. Nice storyline, kool wolfs. Enjoyed it 100%. Don't miss it!

To be honest this addition to the Underworld series has made me enjoy the idea of the first two, and want to watch them again. I was surprised with it to be honest, and waited patiently for them to stuff the storyline up. Not bad at all. Though, I have trouble taking Bill Nighy seriously, but that's because I love him in comedy movies.

I have to say this movie as far as story left a lot to be desired however the cinematography was beautiful and the choreography has merits. Without giving too much away I will say that the CG is well done in this one again and the really there was nothing you either didn't know or couldn't pick up from the first two.

This prequel instalment of the Underworld franchise is a worthy addition. Although, I don't believe that the movie could stand on its own like the first Underworld did. Its EXACTLY what I would expect the origin story for the battle between vampires and Lycans to be like. Unfortunately, on that same note there wasn't anything insightful regarding either race or any unexpected plot twists like the original Underworld or Underworld Evolution had. While I enjoyed this movie and will most definitely pick it up on DVD to complete my Underworld movie collection, I was a little bit saddened that the sense of mystery and intrique which characterized the other two films, was sorely missing from this movie.

If you are a fan of the Underworld franchise, then you'll probably enjoy this movie  , if not and you haven't seen the first two movies, you may be disappointed. All I have to say is that I'll take THIS type of vampire movie ANY day over the touchy feely Twilight. IMHO, THIS is how vampire/ monster movies should be.

Fans of the series should enjoy this prequel. It wasn't really needed too much as far as the story is concerned but does give any future installments a better base to build off of. The effects here are pretty cool and I liked how they differentiated between the feral werewolves and the more advanced Lycans. The vampires themselves seemed pretty useless though. Other than the king and his daughter, the rest of the vampires were basically portrayed as humans that die in the sunlight. There are even humans portrayed in the movie that are faster and stronger than the vampires. The effects and the action of the movie make you forget about such things as they are done rather well. If you are looking for some mindless action with a decent story right now, this is for you.

5. Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans Fri Jan 23, 2009 Pav #9 11:45am B 84 :fresh:

This prequel (to what is now the Underworld trilogy) does a good job of providing continuity in the overall story line. This is the origin story of the war between the vampires and lycans. We are introduced to Sonja and come to understand her pivotal role, which provides the basis of the story arc for the next two films. The film is fairly short by this genre's standards which works to it's advantage. This movie doesn't drag on and on, but the bulk of the action sequences ARE chopped up into micro pieces making everything a total blur. I hate that. Why include those scenes at all? I'd prefer more character development and more characters (Sonja's mother for instance?) to that mess. The most powerful scene in the movie when Sonja meets her fate, is good but given more story (fleshing out her history with Lucien?, etc.) could have been great. Fans will definitely appreciate this movie, but may wonder if there are any more compelling Underworld stories to be told...
