Unknown (2006)

Since I first saw the trailer for this movie back in November (by then it was already out of theaters) I had wanted to see this. It was only in limited release and not in theaters more than a week or two. It just looked really interesting and for a low budget flick, it had a pretty solid cast. A lot of people compare this as a mix between Mindhunters and Saw. I can see the comparisons but this movie is very different. I thought it was a pretty good movie that didn't exceed my expectations but didn't disappoint either.

Unknown Review

Rating: 6.0/10
Rated: R
Starring: Jim Caviezel, Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper, Jeremy Sisto, and Joe Pantoliano
Genre: Thriller/Drama
My Grade: C+

"Unknown" is a little-known film that has a powerhouse cast and one of the most brilliant plots I have seen in cinema for the past few years, but its not made to its highest potential. "Unknown" is alot like the films "Memento" and "The Usual Suspects" and the film knows it because on the back of the cover it basically thanks them for some ideas. That aside, it is an incredibly ingenious plot and I'm ALWAYS a fan of who-dunits... that are done right, of course. At the beginning, you are glued to the screen because the suspense is at an all-time high... there is an "unknown" factor that fills your head, you don't know what's coming and thats what is so exciting about it. But, one by one as the people wake up in the warehouse who's minds have been erased and they race against the clock to find out who the kidnappers and hostages really are, the suspense unfortunately dies down.

Directed by Simon Brand
Starring James Caviezel, Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Joe Pantoliano, Barry Pepper, Jeremy Sisto, Peter Stormare

"Unknown" combines major plot elements of movie trailers and gives pittance to the contributions of its respectable actors notably Jim Caviezel's unconvincing central character. And what is Greg Kinnear doing in a movie like this anyway? The story: five men wake up in an impossibly secured desert warehouse with their memories erased and try to figure out who are the good guys and who are the bad. Editing is weak-the movie needs a good dose of suspense. Flashbacks are compromising, furthered by needless twists.
Best Scene: Waking up.
