When I talk about movies I rather dislike *cough* LOATHE *cough* this movie ends up being on that evil list. I have seen this film twice, and it still makes me feel quesy and unhappy. Sure, Laurence Oliver is a hunk, and yes, David Niven has some rather handsome sideburns; but the story of a fatal romance (much like Red and Scarlet in Gone With The Wind) makes me alltogether unhappy. I mean, the main character ruins everyone's life because of his fatal errors, and we are supposed to PITY him? Classic or not, the Gothic tale of emotionally constipated lovers with mental problems who run their hands into glass windows is WRONG! The story follows the plot of two young lovers who are both rebellious and strange. (I realized this when suddenly the young lady starts madly whipping her brother with a riding crop) These lovers are seperate by...God knows what...and cannot get married. Then they torture each other their entire lifes and continue even after they are dead to haunt each other's houses. This, my friends, is no romantic classic. This is merely a mix of drama, stupidity, and handsome faces. I have said my peace...now let me go haunt my lover's house

***/****

Pro: The dark sections of the story. The cinematography & direction. The ending.

Con: The polarization of Kathy. Some hammy acting. The dialogue.

Wuthering Heights (1939)
The great classic from 1939 when Olivier was at his handsome best. One of very few film adaptations that I actually like better than the book it's based on.

Sense and Sensibility (1995)
The best film adaptation of a Jane Austin novel which accurately captures Austin's story and its spirit and humor. Fantastic ensemble cast and impeccable period detail.

Secret Window (2004)
So many people hated this movie so much, I was prepared for a real cinematic disaster. I was surprised that I thought it was really pretty good. Johnny Depp is usually worth watching and he was good here too. I didn't catch on to what was really going on until almost the end and liked the conclusion.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004)
This is a direct-to-video release of the sequel to Starship Troopers from several years ago. My husband really wanted to see it so we rented it. Really pretty bad.

Wuthering Heights (Wyler, 1939)

T-Meter :fresh:78%
My Rating :fresh:9/10

The quirky Coen Brothers love the old, pulpy Gangster Films of the 30's and the Film Noirs of the 40's. This influence can clearly be seen in Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, and even The Big Lebowski. Seeing as how I thoroughly enjoyed all of those films, I knew I would most likely enjoy their most recent Film Noir homage, The Man Who Wasn't There. It turns out I was correct.

Beethoven's beautifull Piano Sonatas (several different Numbers are used) provide the perfect melancholic tone for this deliberately slow paced Noir that stars Billy Bob Thornton as the everyday schmo, Ed Crane. Crane lives in Santa Rosa, California with his wife Doris (Francis McDormand). He works in a barber shop to pay the bills, but he doesn't really care one way or the other if the bills are paid. As a matter of fact, Crane shows no emotion about anything. He just kind of aimlessly wanders around from his barber shop, to home, and back again. You might think that his wife would bring some joy into his life, but she's almost as boring as him, so that's a no go as well.

One day Crane gets a business offer from one his customers, Creighton Tolliver (Jon Polito), to go into the dry cleaning business. All Crane needs is 10,000 dollars and he will be Tolliver's partner . A web of intriguing spins and surprises in this old school Noir as Thornton's good narration and deadpan humor provide an interesting character study that is even further heightened by Roger Deakin's (O' Brother Where Art Thou?, Fargo) gorgeous, Black & White cinematography, and the good performances from all the supporting players, but especially McDormand as Doris and Scarlett Johansson as the one pure character in the whole movie, "Birdy" Abundas.

:fresh: 4/4. Wuthering Heights is easily one of the best love stories produced into a film ive ever seen. It was first a classic novel written by Emily Bronte. It stars the great Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff a young proud stable boy who falls in love with Cathy(Merle Oberon) a materialistic girl. They share a love for each other for the longest time. She then meets Edgar (David Niven) who is from an incredibly wealthy family. Heathcliff overhears Cathy saying Edgar asked her to marry him and he leaves in a rage and isnt to be seen for years. The whole story is being told by Cathys nanny to a man who is staying at Wuthering Heights for the night. The film itself is to good for mere words. I believe it should have beat out Gone With the Wind for the Best Picture of 1939.
